  • Sunday, May 5 – A World of Accordions presents the World Accordion Day Dr. Willard A. Palmer Festival at Harrington ARTS Center, 1401 Belknap Street in Superior. The 2024 Honorees are George Curletto, Willard A. Palmer III and Joan C. Sommers. Tickets are $25 per event, $50 1 day, $75 2 days. World Accordion Day is May 6.   • Monday, May 6 – To help celebrate International Composting Awareness Week, six drop sites for composting food waste will open throughout Superior on Monday. Food waste must be bagged in BPI certified bags and can include all solid foods such as vegetable and fruits, pasta, rice, desserts, bakery items, dairy, meats, bones. Liquids, grass clippings, leaves, brush, cardboard, and paper products are not allowed. Food waste scraps will be collected at these drop sites and hauled to Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) NWCSA North End, 1009 N 6th Street, Billings Park Maintenance Garage Parking Lot, 25 Billings Dr., Barker’s Island Public Boat Launch, Bethel Lutheran Church, 5821 John Avenue, Loon’s Foot Boat Landing, Bear Creek Park, 110 Moccasin Mike Road.   • Tuesday, May 7 – The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will present its Jazz Band with the Big Time Jazz Orchestra (BTJO) in a special Scholarship Concert at 7:30 p.m. in Manion Theatre in the Holden Fine Arts Center at 1805 Catlin Ave. Proceeds from the concert will go toward a scholarship for a UW-Superior music major for excellence in jazz studies. Under the direction of Greg Kehl Moore, professor of music and jazz program director at UW-Superior, the concert will feature works by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Gordan Goodwin, Pat Metheny, Charles Mingus, Bob Mintzer, Ellis Marsalis, Astor Piazzolla and Radiohead. The 2024 BTJO/UWS Jazz Scholarship winner will be announced at intermission during this the concertS. uggested donation for this concert is $10.   • Wednesday, May 8 – Italian-American Club Spaghetti Dinner at the American Legion, 5814 Grand Avenue from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Experience a traditional spaghetti and meatball dinner. Adults $10, Children 12 and under $5. Take out dinners are available. There will be raffle prizes: 1st prizes $200, 2nd Prize $100, 3rd Prize $50 and many more prizes.
  • Saturday, May 11 – The Saint Louis County Historical Society and its Veterans Memorial Hall are holding a 5k to honor the memory of Command Sergeant Major John S. Werner. Start time is 9AM with a short ceremony prior at The Other Place Bar & Grill, 3930 East Calvary Rd, Duluth, MN 55803. The entry fee is $30.   • Saturday, May 11 – National Train Day at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Celebrate the 155th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. Activities include Leonard Draper Maintenance Shop will be open for tours, Railroad speeder rides, swap meet, visiting locomotives on display, kids crafts and much more at https://lsrm.org/event/national-train-day/

  • Sunday, May 12 – Theatre Novi Most launches The Ukrainian Words Project, showing at Zeitgeist. The Ukrainian Words Project features an hour-long staged reading of excerpts from newly commissioned plays written by Ukrainian playwrights since the war began in February 2022. The reading includes music by Lev & Olga Frayman and Yev Rosso and is followed by optional Story Circles with members of the audience. This event is free to attend, but registration is required.   • Thursday, May 16 – Collaborating Strength in our Community: “Bringing together professionals who work alongside victims of abuse” at UW-Superior Great Room from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  Must be pre-registered. Light breakfast at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $75 including breakfast and supplies. Learn about diversity, equity and inclusion in the work place. Watch an educational short film and participatee in a discussion highlightingthe hidden dynamics of abuse.   • Friday, May 17 – HDC Cloquet Outreach Center Fundraiser at 24 10th Street in Cloquet from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. It’s an evening of fun and philanthropy at the HDC Cloquet Outreach Center. There will be a lasagna dinner, including fresh salad, warm bread and dessert. There will be a silent auction and raffle draws. Adults: $10 per plate children: $5.
  • Saturday, May 18 – Spaghetti Dinner in Hill City from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Hill City Fire Hall in Hill City. $10 per plate. Children under 5 eat free. Proceeds benefit the Hill City 4th of July Celebration.
  • Saturday, May 18 – JDRF Community One Walk at UMD Malosky Stadium, 1336 University Drive, at 10:00 a.m. Participants will walk 5k to raise money for critical type 1 diabetes (T1D) research, and be at the center of the global effort to improve the lives of millions living with T1D.   • Wednesday, May 22 – Community Connect Event at the Hibbing Memorial Arena, 400 E 23rd Street in Hibbing from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Community members facing homelessness or financial challenges are invited to attend this free event. Organized in collaboration with local partners and inspired by the national Project Homeless Connect. Arrowhead Transit is offering free rides to and from the Community Connect event. There will be free food, clothing and hygiene items, hair trimming, crisis information, housing support, children and family services, mental health resources and more.   • Saturday May 25 – 27th Annual DGFS PLANT SALE – Sponsored by the Duluth Garden Flower Society at the Duluth Rose Garden Parking Lot. 8:00-10:00 am or until sold out. The event will be held rain or shine. Get great deals on prerennials, annuals, native plants, orchids, Heirloom vegetables, roses, herbs, and cool garden art treasures.   • June 4 – 29 – The Third Annual Variations: Fiber Arts show is taking center stage at the Washburn Cultural Center, 1 East Bayfield St., Washburn (WCC) galleries throughout the month of June. Variations emphasizes works created for aesthetic, thought provoking, educational and emotional or spiritual value, distinguishing it from fiber works created primarily for function. For further information about this invitational show, contact the center 715-373-5591, or email  Washburnculturalcenter@gmail.com.   All are invited to attend an opening reception on Thursday, June 6, 5-7:00 pm.   Center hours are Tuesday-Sunday noon to 4:00 pm.

  • Tuesday, June 11 – St. Luke’s will hold a cancer lecture called ‘The Role of Genetics in Cancer Development and Treatment’ at the Depot from 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. While genetics can play a role in developing cancer, thanks to breakthroughs in research, we can now also use genetics to predict cancer’s progression and create tailored treatments for patients. Genetics can also be used for people with a cancer diagnosis or family history of cancer to learn about their risks of developing cancer and personalize their screening plans. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Panel begins at 6 p.m. The event is in the first-floor theater of the Depot, 506 W. Michigan St. Enter through the St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center entrance on the west side. A parking lot is available off W. Michigan St. and S. 6th Ave. W. and along Michigan Ave. We thank St. Luke’s Foundation for generously sponsoring this event and the cost of parking. RSVP is requested but not required.
