Brandon Weatherz: Windy Wednesday

May 22: Windy Wednesday

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather team

Flooding concerns from Tuesday’s wet system have mostly subsided. An Areal Flood Advisory is in effect for a portion of the North Shore of St. Louis County and Lake County until 9:15 am where minor flooding is expected due to elevated river and stream levels. The responsible weather system is moving north today with scattered showers lingering generally north of U.S. Hwy 2. An isolated shower or weak thunderstorm may pop up in east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin in the late afternoon and evening.

We’ll feel a gusty west wind take over behind the departing low pressure system today. Expect sustained winds of 20 to 25 mph with gusts approaching 40 mph. Highs range from low 50s to mid-60s looking from north to south across the Northland with around 60 in the Twin Ports. Given that most areas start out in the 50s, temps don’t budge much today.

Tonight will be dry with partly cloudy skies and lows in mid-40s to mid-30s. Areas of frost are possible near and north of the Iron Range. Thursday is partly cloudy and warmer with highs ranging from low 60s to mid-70s with mid-60s in the Twin Ports. A front draped just south of Lake Superior is where isolated showers and thunderstorms may form in the late afternoon and evening. A better chance for showers and a few storms arrives from the west Thursday night and fills out the Northland on Friday.

Friday will also feature a gusty east wind, keeping shoreline communities in the 40s. Highs away from Lake Superior will be in low 50s to mid-60s. Memorial Day Weekend will feature slight chances for additional rain in the Northland Saturday through Monday. Highs will generally be in the 60s. A breezy west wind on Saturday keeps temps rather uniform in the Twin Ports, then an east wind will keep temps near Lake Superior cooler on Sunday and Monday.
