Justin Liles: Thick fog tonight followed by heat and humidity by the weekend.

July 10th: Thick fog tonight

Thick fog tonight

Tonight, we will start to see the moisture begin to increase through Minnesota, Wisconsin, and U.P. of Michigan. The Gulf of Mexico is wide open, and the transport of liquid is on the way. This typically means three things for us. One will begin tonight with temperatures cooling down to the dew point temperatures creating widespread dense fog. The thickest fog will be in low lying valley areas and near water. Expect this during your early morning travel.

The second thing all this moisture will bring will be higher humidity and uncomfortable conditions. Friday through Monday will not only be humid but hot as well. The heat and humidity working in tandem will create dangerous levels of heat for our region as heat indices could climb well into the 90s. Heat headlines from advisories to warnings are likely, especially for central and southern Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Finally, when ever you have this amount of heat and moisture, you are only one ingredient away from strong severe storms. Any kink in the flow coming in could be enough of a lifting mechanism to transport all the moisture higher up in the atmosphere. There is a chance for this late Saturday and again late Sunday. We will keep an eye on the potential for storms this weekend.
