Brandon Weatherz: Putting the warmth in the rearview mirror

The unseasonable warmth that kicked off October will soon be a distant memory. A cold front that swept the region last night into this morning triggering the cooldown is also responsible for breezy southwest winds and scattered showers. Temperatures are still mild heading out the door ranging from low 60s to low 70s, but these same temps will be similar to our afternoon highs as we hold rather steady. This weather system will send more waves of showers, take additional hits to our temperatures, and keep winds gusty through the rest of the week.

Periods of generally light rain linger today, return from the northwest overnight into Thursday morning, and then once again sweep the Northland from northwest to southeast Thursday night into Friday. Accumulation will continue to be rather minimal with most areas, including the Twin Ports, picking up around .25” today through Friday.

Tonight will see lows into mid-40s to low 50s, then we climb only to low 50s to low 60s on Thursday. By Friday, it truly starts to feel chilly with highs staying in mid-40s to near 50. Widespread frost is possible Friday night into Saturday morning.

The cool air being directed across Lake Superior by a breezy northwest wind will generate the potential for lake effect clouds and rain along the South Shore Friday night through the weekend. A rain jacket or umbrella wouldn’t be a bad idea for anyone heading to the Bayfield Apple Festival. Beyond lake effect, the weekend will be quiet and cool.
