Brandon Weatherz: Unseasonable warmth to end January

January 30: Unseasonable warmth to end January

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather Team

Areas of drizzle and light snow overnight have brought a dusting of snow and icy patches to parts of the Northland for our Tuesday morning commute. Slick spots are mostly limited to where temps dipped below freezing overnight, which is near and north of the Iron Range and near Ironwood. The mixed bag of precipitation exits the Northland from the north this morning with the South Shore locally seeing additional accumulation, which still stays under an inch. Our Tuesday is otherwise mostly cloudy with a north wind shifting out of the west through the day around 10 mph. Temps hold rather steady, but given how mild we start off, highs manage mid to upper 30s.

Tonight is partly to mostly cloudy with patchy fog. Lows stay in upper 20s to low 30s. The final day of January will then feature patchy morning fog, partly cloudy skies, a breezy southwest wind, and very warm temperatures with highs in the mid to upper 40s brushing within a few degrees of daily records.

A cold front passes Wednesday night and leaves us with a breezy east wind and cooler conditions for our Thursday. Even so, highs in mid-30s will continue to warm trend for the start of February. The weather pattern will keep us consistently dry and mild through the weekend and the start of next week. It’ll be warm enough for an east wind to bring slightly cooler conditions to Lake Superior’s shorelines while inland areas approach the 40s. Having to clarify “cooler by the Lake” in February adds perspective to just how warm it will be for this time of year.
