Entering high school Hermantown’s Liv Birkeland thought her collegiate calling would come from the courts. Now a senior, with a baton in hand and sneakers laced tight, track and field proved to be her destiny.

On Wednesday she signed her National Letter of Intent (NLI) to compete at the Division II level with Minnesota State University, Moorhead.

“It definitely wasn’t the easiest decision. I thought definitely basketball at the start of my high school career, but I really leaned into track my last two years. I’m absolutely in love with it and I’ve been running since I ever could walk,” Birkeland shared.

Along with track & field and basketball, Birkeland also played soccer for the Hawks.

Her sister Brita currently races for North Dakota State University track and field, and her brother David plays basketball for Concordia College-Moorhead.
