Underdogs to top dogs, that has been the tale of the Duluth Huskies’ 2022 playoff run.

Securing a spot in the Northwoods League championship game Duluth (37-33) learned Wednesday night their opponent would be the Kalamazoo Growlers (39-35). They defeated the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 8-6 in the 10th inning to claim the Great Lakes Division title.

Boasting the best record the Huskies will host Kalamazoo for the one-game Summer Collegiate World Series Thursday at Wade Stadium with first pitch set for 6:35pm.

Like the Growlers the Huskies’ journey also began with an upset. Duluth took their round one best-of-three series against Eau Claire in two games despite going 0-8 with the Express in the regular season. Then Tuesday night they knocked down the Willmar Stingers 5-3 to claim their first Great Plains Division title since 2018.

“It’s been a season certainly of ups and downs,” owner Mike Rosenzweig expressed. “For the fans who have been here all summer long, they’ve seen us win some close ones and we’ve lost to some by quite a few runs. It’s been very exciting, and every day the momentum just continues to grow.”

This will mark their fourth league championship appearance, however Duluth has yet to win it all.

The ticket office at Wade Stadium opens Thursday at 9 a.m. or call 218-786-9909. Doors open at 5:35 p.m.
