Blizzard Tour begins Wednesday sans ride

The Black Woods Blizzard Tour powers through with no snow in 2024, but the important fundraising and support elements are still there.

The Black Woods Blizzard Tour may not include as many revving engines and snowmobile suits in 2024, but the important fundraising and support elements are still there.

The Blizzard Tour starts Wednesday and runs through Saturday. This year, the goal is to raise $2 million for Never Surrender, an organization that benefits people living with ALS and their families.

The event will culminate Saturday with the ALS Light of Hope panel with three of the leading neurologists who research and treat the disease: Dr. Merit Cudkowicz of Massachusetts General, Dr. Amber Erickson of Essentia Health, and Dr. David Walk of the University of Minnesota.

A few former Minnesota Twins are involved every year. Former players Kent Hrbek and Terry Steinbach each lost their fathers to ALS, and former manager Ron Gardenhire has been joining them at the Blizzard Tour for more than 15 years.

“To see how we have grown this tour and to see the total amounts of money that we’ve raised and where that money’s going, I mean, I just can’t say enough about it,” Steinbach said.
