Spring storm knocking out power

The spring storm moving through the Northland Thursday is knocking out power for thousands of people.

Duluth East High School was without power and trying to operate on some generators, although they don’t have enough capacity to operate as normal. School officials allowed students to leave with parent permission.

UMD also went to reduced operations because of a power outage. They canceled on-campus classes for the rest of Thursday afternoon and expected to resume normal operations at 5:30 p.m.

At about 7 p.m. Thursday, Minnesota Power was reporting more than 1,800 customers were in the dark. They said high winds are causing scattered outages.

Fewer than 200 Lake County Power customers were without power.

Superior Water, Light & Power was doing better, with no outages reported Thursday evening.
