Third Street reconditioning project to resume Monday

On Monday, April 22, workers will resume the Reconditioning Project of 3rd Street, closing the right lane of traffic from 12th Avenue E to Mesaba Avenue. This will allow work to be done on the upper side of the road. Officials say that they do not anticipate having to close 3rd Street completely during this phase of the project.

According to City of Duluth officials, work will consist of concrete pavement repairs, bituminous milland overlay, ADA intersection improvements, and the removal of the signals at 4th Avenue W, 3rd Avenue E, and 5th Avenue E.

The public should be aware parking will not be allowed on the right lane side of the road, however signs will be removed on Sunday evening to allow for parking on the left lane side. Avenues in the work area may be closed as needed to complete the work within the intersections.

Work on the upper side of 3rd Street is expected to be completed sometime in July, when traffic will then be switched for work to begin on the lower side. Construction is expected to be complete by the end of September 2024.

Officials say the work completed in 2023 involved reconstructing the intersections at Lake Avenue and 6th Avenue E. New signal lights were also added at those intersections.
