Bong Bridge reopens following semi-truck accident

The Richard I. Bong Bridge between Superior and Duluth reopened Tuesday evening after an empty FedEx semitruck rolled over onto its side when traveling northbound.

“The Truck rolled over on its left side and struck a power pole in the median coming to rest on its side against the concrete median barrier blocking the left lane,” explained Lt. Jill Frankfurth, a public information officer with the Minnesota State Patrol.  Frankfurth stated that no injuries were reported.

When asked if strong winds played a role in the crash, Frankfurth stated that the, “Crash is still under investigation at this time.” 

Original Story: The Minnesota Department of Transportation says a portion of the Richard I. Bong Bridge between Superior and Duluth is closed following an accident. The Duluth-bound lanes are closed temporarily while crews work to clear the scene.

The Superior-bound lanes are open.

Reports from the scene shows a FedEx semi-truck tipped over. No word on injuries and the Duluth Police are assisting.
