One dead following accident on Vermilion Trail

On October 31, 2023, at 3:53 PM, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a report of an iPhone crash alert in the area of Vermilion Trail and Harris Bay Road in unorganized township 55R14. Shortly after, a citizen, who had stopped to help, called in and reported that a child was stuck under the vehicle. The vehicle had rolled and was resting on its side.

Air Medical was started immediately along with numerous fire departments and the St. Louis County Rescue Squad. Unfortunately, despite lifesaving efforts by responders, a 5-year-old child was pronounced deceased at the scene. The adult driver and another child were also in the vehicle and transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The road conditions were packed ice due to the recent snow fall and freezing temperatures.

The Minnesota State Patrol was requested and responded to the scene to assist in the crash investigation. The Midwest Medical Examiners Officer also responded for the death investigation. The St. Louis County Chaplain also responded to assist the family.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Minnesota State Patrol, Colvin Fire Department, Elsburg Fire Department, Hoyt Lakes Ambulance, Palo First Responders, North Memorial Air Medical, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, St. Louis County Chaplain and the Midwest Medical Examiners Office.
