225-acre Grass fire in Mille Lacs County contained Tuesday night

Crews were called to battle a grass fire north of Milaca, Minnesota in Mille Lacs County on Tuesday. According to the Minnesota Incident Command (MNICS) Facebook page, firefighters responded to an estimated 100-acre grass fire at 5:00 p.m. on March 19. The fire was located ten miles north of Milaca, east of Highway 169.

As of Wednesday morning, MNICS said crews were able to surround and control the fire. The fire had spread to an estimated 225 acres and firefighters will “mop-up” and patrol the interior of the fire on Wednesday. Crews will work with hand tools and water to prevent any future flareups.

Officials say winds and dry conditions contributed to the growth of the fire. The public is asked to avoid the area for their safety and the safety of firefighters.

Multiple aircraft were called to the scene Tuesday evening to help support ground firefighting resources.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Milaca Fire Department, and Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office assisted.
