Carlton County Sheriff’s Office responds to water emergency

Around 4:30pm on Thursday evening, the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a man
acting erratically and who appeared to be experiencing a mental health emergency.

The man was reported to be on the bike trail that crosses Highway 27 in Moose Lake Township. Carlton
County Deputies and a Conservation Officer with the Minnesota DNR responded and attempted to
speak with a 32-year-old Moose Lake man.

Authorities report the man was uncooperative and walked into the woods, swam into the nearby Moose Horn River and made his way up the river into Moose Head Lake.

The Moose Lake Fire Department and Essentia Health EMS were called to the scene. While still in the water, the male continued to be uncooperative while rescuers attempted to get him on the rescue boats.

After nearly 50 minutes in the water, deputies were able to take the man into custody. He did not appear to have any serious injuries and was transported to Essentia Health Moose Lake for a medical evaluation.
