In celebration of 40 years in service, the Harbortown Rotary President set a goal of completing a combination of 40 hands-on projects and organizational grants for the community.

“The Rotary phrase ‘Service Above Self’ is something we hold in high regard as a club, so what better way to celebrate 40 years of service than doing what Harbortown Rotary has continually done best; give back. The 40 for 40 challenge is a way to thank our local community by challenging our club members to complete a combination of 40 hands-on service projects and community grants throughout the year.”

Tony Hansen, Harbortown President

Harbortown Rotary feels that it is on track for its ’40 for 40′ goal within their Rotary year. Some of these projects include a Lakewalk clean-up, Bentleyville, Lester River Rendezvous, STARBASE event set-up, packing backpacks at New Hope for Families, Life House furniture transportation, and helping First Witness move to their new location.

As part of their ’40 for 40′ goal, Habortown Rotary packaged food boxes at Second Harvest Northland on Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.

“It’s nice that we can get volunteers together. Harbortown Rotary tries to do this like at least once a year where we get up here,” said member Bob MacLean. “Last time we were here, we were doing something completely different. This is really kind of a fun new adventure where we’re weighing out an exact portion of cereal, and it’s going to go to a lot of hungry families.”

They still have four more months left in their year and they have many projects still on the books to complete. This includes supporting local community groups such as Chester Bowl, the Family Freedom Center, and YMCA Camp Miller.

The Rotary Club is also on track to give out over $20,000 in local grants and scholarships.

Harbortown Rotary is a non-profit service organization that has been established in Duluth since 1984 and currently has over 60 active members with a motto of ‘Service Above Self.’ New members are always welcome.
