DNR seeking public comment on all-terrain trail

The City of Chisholm is looking to secure funding for an all-terrain vehicle trail connection, and is also looking for public comment on the proposal. The trail would be a connection between the City of Hibbing and the Alborn-Pengilly Railroad Trail in Lavell Township.

Minnesota’s Off-Highway Vehicle Trails Assistance Program is a cost-share program that facilitates development and maintenance of OHV trails, including ATV trails, at the initiative of enthusiast groups or clubs with support and participation of local government sponsors.

The proposed new trail, known as the Hibbing to Alborn ATV Trail, would provide an 18-mile connection between Hibbing and the Alborn-Pengilly Railroad Trail, a grant-in-aid ATV trail currently open for public use. The proposed trail would follow 12.2 miles of public roads currently open for ATV use and 5.8 miles of abandoned railroad grade. The trail would be maintained by the Northern Traxx ATV Club.

Written comments will be accepted until 4:30p.m. on Monday, March 20. Comments can be submitted via:

  • email to brad.dekkers@state.mn.us
  • mail to Brad Dekkers, Assistant area supervisor, Parks and Trails Division, Minnesota DNR, 650 Highway 169, Tower, MN 55790.

A map of the proposed trail segments can be found at the project page on the DNR website.
