The Hibbing girl’s cross country team is under a week away from making their first state meet appearance in 1995.

The Bluejackets placed first as a team in the Section 7AA meet on Thursday to secure the tournament berth.

Coming in fifth place freshman Abigail Theien was Hibbing’s top finisher with a 5k time of 20:11. She was one of five Bluejackets to land in the top twenty at sections.

When all the action wrapped up at the Cloquet Country Club, and they learned the team succeeded in officially breaking the over two decade long state drought, it was an exciting moment.

"The anticipation of the 20 minutes before the results had posted was a little much for us to handle, but once we found out the actual results it was well worth all of the hard work that the kids put in this year," assistant coach Serena Sullivan said.

The state race is set for Saturday at St. Olaf College. The Class AA meet is set for 3:30pm. For the full schedule, click here.
