We’re in for some weather whiplash as yesterday’s cool lake breeze briefly retreats for a toasty Tuesday, only to return this evening. Most areas will reach into the 80s today, including closer to Lake Superior in the Twin Ports due to a southwest wind. The Borderland stays in the 70s as this area will be the first to see a cold front moving in from Canada. We look along the international border for rain chances through the morning, then showers and thunderstorms gradually move southward across northern Minnesota through the afternoon and evening with the passing front. Plan for outdoor activities to move indoors if necessary. The Twin Ports will see rain chances begin around 5 pm and taper off around midnight. No severe thunderstorms are expected, but heavy downpours and locally high rain totals are possible along and south of a line roughly from Grand Rapids to Duluth.

A breezy east wind will kick in behind the front. As this happens in the Twin Ports around 6 to 8 pm, expect a dramatic drop in temperatures. A strong east wind then takes us through tonight and tomorrow. Highs Wednesday will stay in the 40s for shoreline communities. Inland areas reach 60s with sunshine. Wednesday night will feature lows in the 30s with patchy frost possible. Those with an early start on gardening will want to protect plants. This will be followed by a warming trend accompanied by sunshine that takes us through Memorial Day weekend.
