Brandon Weatherz: Much cooler near Lake Superior through the weekend

Yesterday’s summery warmth will be replaced by much cooler conditions for areas surrounding Lake Superior today through the weekend as an east wind returns. A stalled front will keep shower and thunderstorm chances draped generally along and south of U.S. Hwy 2 today. The front and its precipitation potential has shifted a touch south since yesterday, lowering the chance for rain in the Twin Ports, but keeping us on the northern edge of rain chances. Rain may be heavy at times, and if heavy rain loiters in any one spot long enough, we may see localized flash flooding concerns. Rain pulls to our south tonight and the Northland should be generally dry the rest of the weekend, cooperating nicely with Minnesota Fishing Opener.

Temps start off warm this morning with most areas in the 50s, but the east wind picking up to 10-15 mph will make it tough for us to rise much past 60 on the hill in Duluth. Canal Park will stay in the 40s. Meanwhile, areas out of the reach of Lake Superior return to the 70s. Tonight is cloudy and breezy with lows in mid-40s to mid-50s. Saturday will feature a stronger east wind, sustained near 20 mph and gusting up to 40 mph. Shoreline communities stay in 40s to 50s while inland communities top off mostly in the 60s. We look from Bemidji to Orr and north of there for 70s.

High pressure moves in Sunday to secure sunshine for Mother’s Day. A breezy east wind will persist, with “cooler by the lake” conditions continuing. Upper 60s to mid-70s will be found elsewhere. A west wind kicks in Monday to send all of us back into the 70s. A dry stretch of weather looks to take us into the middle of next week.
