Brandon Weatherz: Trending warmer to end the week

Our Thursday begins with quite the spread in early morning temperatures. Some areas such as Superior and Ashland have fallen to 32 with frost to contend with. Meanwhile, thicker clouds over north central Minnesota have kept temps in the 50s and produced a few sprinkles. Cloud cover will gradually erode from the east today, but haze from wildfire smoke will remain. The breezy east wind that has been with us each day this week is lighter today, but offshore winds linger. This will keep the cool air of Lake Superior more limited to areas immediately nearby where temps stay in mid-50s. Duluth International Airport will be allowed to rise near 72, and mid-70s will be common for inland communities.

Tonight will be another cool one with mostly clear skies. Similar to this morning, we’ll find milder conditions west in the 50s with the temp falling looking east where some will dip into the 30s. Friday will be warm with highs topping off around 80. A southwest wind will allow the warmth to spread down the hill in the Twin Ports. We look north for showers and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening. Rain chances will follow a front that sweeps the Northland to the south overnight into Saturday morning. Isolated showers remain possible Saturday, mostly away from Lake Superior. As we’ve been saying, this round will not bring the widespread accumulation we’re in need of. Another dry stretch looks to arrive starting Sunday. The weekend will also feature the return of a breezy east wind.
