We have one more hot and dry day before change arrives to the Northland in the form of much needed moisture. Highs return to mid-80s to low 90s today under sunny skies. Be sure to hydrate and keep an eye on pets. A SSE wind will weaken Lake Superior’s influence on temperatures. The heat and sunshine will allow for high ground-level ozone that will affect air quality, mostly south of Lake Superior. An Air Quality Alert is in effect for Cass, Crow Wing, Aitkin, and Pine Co. until 9 pm Thursday. All of Wisconsin has the Alert through 11 pm Friday. Sensitive groups should limit outdoor exertion.

A wet stretch of weather first begins near International Falls this evening as a cold front approaches. Heavy rain and high localized totals are possible with the showers and thunderstorms that develop tonight through the weekend. Rain chances stay mostly north overnight, then scattered showers and thunderstorms develop Friday afternoon and evening across northeast Minnesota and into northwest Wisconsin. Friday night’s round focuses mostly north of Duluth across the Arrowhead. Widespread rain returns from the west Saturday and lingers overnight through Sunday. Rain tapers off Monday morning. When all is said and done, most of the Northland should pick up a good inch of rain and some areas may pick up two to three inches.
