It was time for celebration and dance at the Simply Ballroom on West Superior Street as they held a free to the public group class and dance party to celebrate their one year anniversary of being here in the Northland.

“Simply Ballroom was originally in Saint Louis, Missouri, where we opened originally in 1990. We’ve been family owned and operated this entire time, now that I have inherited the studio we’re in the process of moving all of our studios to Duluth instead of having them spread out in Saint Louis and here. Just because we really love the place, the community and the area, it’s been awesome,” said dance instructor David Scherer.

No partner was needed at the event and neither was experience necessary. As new comers were able to get up and moving learning some social dance moves from the ballroom styles of rumba, foxtrot, swing, waltz, tango, cha-cha, and salsa.

“It is so good for you physically and mentally. As a couple, my husband and our friends have been dance related for a long time so it’s a good social activity as well. It’s a lifelong skill, once you know how to dance, you have something to do wherever you go,” added dancer Cathy Hartman.

Whether you’re stepping out on a dance floor for the first time or have been dancing for years Simply Ballrooms philosophy is we all dance for different reasons, varying abilities and of course with our very own style whether for fun or for exercise.

“As far as movement goes if you stop moving for too long, your body doesn’t want to kind of get back to how it was. It takes time to build that up so all of these styles of dance really help with just connecting and keeping motor skills going,” continued Scherer.

The studio also accommodates for any level, offering beginner dance lessons, competitive lessons, wedding classes and much more to get you up and moving.

“I’m stronger, I’m more balanced and I also feel like there is mental health benefits of stress reduction,” concluded participant Khris Swensen.
