The sixth ranked University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) women’s hockey team is gearing up to host number two Ohio State University in their Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) opener Friday and Saturday at 3 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena.

15 minutes prior to puck drop on Saturday the Bulldogs will immortalize a program great in the rafters. UMD will hoist the banner for Gabbie Hughes’ Hockey Humanitarian Award.

Last season Hughes became the 28th honoree of the award, and first-ever Bulldog player, men’s or women’s, to receive it. It came in recognition for her work with Sophie’s Squad, an organization dedicated to raising awareness for athlete’s mental health.

“I think what’s cool about the Humanitarian, so many things, but it spans all of hockey; DI, DII, DIII, men’s, women’s. That’s a lot of people that you’re competeing with so a really special honor,” UMD head coach Maura Crowell said.

Additionally on Thursday Hughes was named to the U.S. Women’s National Team Roster for their November Rivalry Series against Canada.

No. 6 UMD (2-0) hosts No. 2 Ohio State (1-1) Friday and Saturday at 3 p.m..
