UMD softballs lone senior Zavoral, taking in every moment this season

Yet another University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) athletic team is heading to the dance as on Saturday the softball squad broke a 21 year drought beating Augustana 9-0.

Claiming the programs fifth NSIC championship along with an automatic bid into regionals.

A dream come true for the teams one and only senior, Sidney Zavoral who missed walking on graduation day Saturday due to the game, but wouldn’t rather have it any other way.

“I’m speechless, honestly. It’s so exciting and I always have wanted this. Here we are, senior year and I couldn’t have asked for anything better with a better team. The dream came true, that’s for sure,” said Zavoral after the game.

“She is the senior leading the way for us. She’s our one graduating senior this year, and she’s hungry for that win and so for her to show up at the plate and go 4/4 that’s incredible. I mean, she has that leadership behind the plate too, for our pitchers and does a good job talking with and leading them,” added head coach Lynn Anderson.

Five Bulldogs were also awarded with NSIC All-Tournament team honors along with Zavoral including Bender, Burkhardt, Dixon and Weise.

UMD now looks ahead to their placement in the NCAA DII tournament with the selection show on Monday at 9:00 a.m.
