Haley Diem is the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Duluth Community Garden Program. She shares tips to begin gardening.

“My number one piece of advice for people starting to garden is to only plant what you like to eat. What do you normally like to grab when you go to the grocery store?”

Her next piece of advice to start small. “A lot of people get really excited. They plant a large space, and they get overwhelmed.

“When you have an overwhelming task in front you, you’re less inclined to do the task. You’d procrastinate, forget about it, or just don’t want to look at it.”

Haley also reminds us that different plants have different spacing requirements.

If you’re new to gardening, use your skills of observation: “There’s going to be all sorts of stuff that’s going on that’s such a mystery, and that’s like most of the fun.”
