Chances are you are trying to get your hands on an air conditioning unit or probably have one already, in preparation for the heat wave heading to the Northland this week.

Here are some tips that can help you make the most of your cooling unit.

First, pick the right location. Choose a spot in your home that is close to an outlet, away from direct sunlight and in a central location.

Second, block out sunlight. By using curtains and blinds to block direct sunlight into your room, cooling is faster, and your AC will not have to overwork.

Third, use a fan. Either a ceiling or standing fan will help circulate air faster around the room. But, remember to clean your fan regularly, or you’ll end up circulating more dust than cool air.

Lastly, Home cooling can account for about half of summertime electric bill. So, installing a programmable thermostat that raises the setting when the house is empty, and lowers it to a comfortable level when everyone comes home will help you save.

If you do not have access to one an air conditioning unit, you can set a bowl of ice in front of a blowing fan. The air will circulate around it, making the room feel cooler.

Also, Open interior doors to improve the circulation of cool air inside.
