For several years now, MnDOT has been using a remote control lawnmower on steep hills in Duluth.

On Thursday, WDIO saw it in action along Mesaba Avenue.

It can mow up to 5.7 miles per hour, and is handy in hard to reach areas as well.

“As you can see the hill behind us is very steep. If the operator was on a riding mower, he would definitely have a chance of rolling over or possibly sliding into traffic. I slid down into the road once,” shared Jason McPherson, Transportation Generalist Senior. “Safety is the most important thing.”

He estimates he’s used the mower about 200 hours now.
