Brandon Weatherz: One last “cooler by the lake” day

May 9: One last “cooler by the Lake” day

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather team

Our Thursday starts off with temps in 40s for most and mid-30s in the Arrowhead where a Frost Advisory is in effect until 9 am. Another Frost Advisory will be needed in parts of northern Minnesota this evening, and a Freeze Watch has already been issued across northwest Wisconsin for 10 pm this evening until 9 am tomorrow where temps as low as 28 could kill crops and sensitive plants.

An east wind has consistently brought a spread in temperatures in the Twin Ports based on proximity to Lake Superior the last several days, and that’s the case once more today before a wind shift kicks in. Highs stay in mid-40s immediately near the lake, then the temp climbs into mid-50s for Duluth International Airport, and mid-60s abound in north central Minnesota. Our Thursday is otherwise sunny and breezy with the east wind sustained near 15 mph.

The surface high pressure that brings the sun today will keep the driest air over northern Wisconsin tonight, leading to the greatest chance for subfreezing temps being away from Lake Superior in Wisconsin. Frost will also be possible in east central Minnesota and across the Arrowhead with mid-30s. Temps rise looking west with lows staying in the 40s near International Falls and Brainerd. We’ll also want to take steps to protect plants in the Twin Ports, but areas closer to the lake will continue to be milder.

Friday starts with sun, then a passing cold front will bring a patchwork of clouds and scattered showers will move in behind it across northern Minnesota through the morning. The afternoon and evening will then feature sporadic thunderstorms across the Northland. No severe storms are expected, but some storms may produce moments of heavy rain, gusty winds, and small hail. Have a plan to put outdoor plans on pause if necessary. Highs will be in low to mid-60s with a breezy west wind allowing the warmth to spread down the hill in the Twin Ports.

The weekend will then be generally quiet and warmer. Saturday features sunshine and temps in 60s and 70s. Sunday brings widespread 70s with a passing shower or thunderstorm possible, mostly in northwest Wisconsin. Overall, it’ll be a great weekend for the Minnesota Fishing Opener and Mother’s Day.
