Brandon Weatherz: Rain expected this evening into tomorrow

May 15: Rain expected this evening into tomorrow

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather team

A low pressure system emerging from the Dakotas will cross the region through tomorrow with scattered showers and a few thunderstorms. High pressure to the north is still keeping dry air in place this morning, allowing most of the initial moisture to evaporate before reaching the ground in north central Minnesota. Widespread rain begins for western communities after 4 pm and marches east through the evening with most of the Northland seeing the rain tonight through Thursday morning.

Areas of fog may develop Thursday morning, particularly near Lake Superior. We’ll dry out from the west tomorrow with afternoon showers lingering in the Arrowhead and along the South Shore. Around a quarter inch of rain is expected in many areas, including the Twin Ports. The greatest chance for a half inch or more is near and north Grand Rapids and Hibbing.

Temperatures today are similar to yesterday with an east wind around 15 mph keeping temps immediately near Lake Superior in the 40s, Duluth International Airport topping off near 58, and inland communities reaching low 60s to low 70s. We stay above frost territory tonight with lows in the 40s. Thursday then features low 50s to mid-60s.

Friday will be unseasonably warm with temps well in the 70s away from Lake Superior. Those near the big lake still feel quite the difference. Friday is generally dry with a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms, mostly in north central Minnesota. Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected on Saturday. Severe potential will depend on the time and location of a cold front, so we’ll be monitoring that potential.
