Brandon Weatherz: Settling into a chilly stretch

March 18: Settling into a chilly stretch

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather team

The chill that settled into the region over the weekend has set the tone for a cooler week overall. The Monday morning commute may be slick in South Shore communities that picked up lake effect snow yesterday and last night with Gile’s localized total now up to 9.5”. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect in Iron County until noon with up to an additional inch possible locally. Apart from this, scattered flurries are possible this morning which are not expected to stick. Temps start off mostly in the teens, then we top off in low to mid-30s today under mostly cloudy skies.

A round of light snow will move south of the Canadian border this evening toward Ely, Silver Bay, and Grand Marais. That round may reach into the South Shore overnight before tapering off. Tonight will be milder and breezy with lows in mid-20s to low 30s. Tuesday features a passing cold front with winds picking back up near 20 mph out of the northwest. Before the cooler air takes over, it’ll be a touch warmer than today with highs ranging from low 30s to low 40s looking from north to south across the Northland.

Scattered light snow showers are possible near the international border and locally for the South Shore Tuesday into Wednesday. Many areas fall into single digits Tuesday night, then highs stay in upper teens to upper 20s for a cold and blustery day Wednesday. It’ll be sunny with the exception of the South Shore where lake effect clouds linger.

In terms of widespread accumulating snow potential, we look south of the Twin Ports for a round arriving Thursday evening and exiting by Friday. A greater chance of snow returns from the south Saturday evening and fills out the region on Sunday.
