Brandon Weatherz: Trending cooler through Thursday

March 13: Trending cooler through Thursday

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather team

With the past two days each setting a record high for Duluth in the 60s, we’ll begin to trend cooler today. Temperatures will still be above our normal high of 35° and low of 17°. Our Wednesday starts off with temps in 20s and 30s and frost on the windshield for many. Skies become mostly cloudy today with a stray sprinkle working into northern Minnesota from the west. Highs in the region range from 45 for International Falls to 51 for Hibbing to 58 for Hayward. We’ll manage upper 40s in the Twin Ports, but a northeast wind around 5-10 mph will keep temps closer to the lake in low 40s this afternoon.

Tonight is mostly cloudy with lows in mid-20s to mid-30s with temps holding near freezing in the Twin Ports. By Thursday, an east wind will pick up near 15 mph to keep shoreline communities in upper 30s to low 40s. Highs inland will range from mid-40s to low 50s under mostly cloudy skies. A round of rain may brush as far north as Hinckley to Butternut on Thursday, but the better chance remains south of the Northland.

Thursday night may bring a passing flurry to northern Minnesota. Lows will be in the 20s under mostly cloudy skies. Friday brings a slight warm up with highs in mid-40s to near 50 under a mix of clouds and sun. A system passing to the north will send wintry mix chances south of the Canadian border Friday night. Scattered snow and wintry mix showers then remain possible on Saturday, mostly across the Arrowhead.

The same system triggers much cooler air with highs in 30s and 40s on Saturday and mid-20s to low 30s on Sunday. The cold air, blustery northwest winds, and open waters on Lake Superior will direct lake effect snow chances along the South Shore. Periods of lake effect will be possible beginning Saturday night and lasting through Monday morning with localized accumulation of 3-6″ possible in the snow belt.
