Brandon Weatherz: March starts with near-record warmth

March 1: March starts with near-record warmth

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather Team

We’re putting the chill of the last couple of days behind us and settling into a stretch of above average temperatures for the weekend. The unseasonable warmth and moisture colliding with Lake Superior could result in periods of dense fog for shoreline communities including the Twin Ports, particularly on Sunday. Fog would limit temps in these areas while parts of the Northland warm into the 60s.

Our Friday starts off with temps ranging from teens to mid-30s. A warm front that swept the region overnight will set the stage for highs in upper 40s to mid-40s. A breezy south wind will direct cooler conditions along the North Shore of Cook County. Tonight will be partly cloudy with patchy fog possible and lows in mid-20s to low 30s.

A cold front will knock International Falls back in the 30s on Saturday, but the rest of the Northland will see mid-40s to mid-50s. A breezy east wind develops and keeps shoreline communities in the low to mid-40s. We’ll look along the Canadian border for light rain and wintry mix chances beginning Saturday afternoon and lingering overnight.

Daily record warm lows are possible Saturday night as we stay above freezing in 30s and even 40s. Sunday then sees 60s along and south of a line from Brainerd to Moose Lake to Ashland. 50s reach into the Iron Range, then 40s drape along the international border and extend from the North Shore to the Twin Ports where fog may be stubborn.

Rain moves from west to east across the region Sunday afternoon and evening. Snow may try to mix in for what lingers Sunday night into Monday, but we’re trending to dry out before this would amount to much.
