Justin Liles: Slowly becoming cooler

March 13th: Winds off the big lake

Winds off the big lake

Today winds shifted off the lake and cooled down the shoreline communities. Winds will continue to be 20 mph or lower through Friday morning and be off Lake Superior. A large low-pressure system will move in Friday afternoon and evening, increasing winds and could lead to some light snowfall throughout northeastern Minnesota. Snow accumulations are possible along the Canadian border but should stay below an inch.

The cold front sweeping through will create northwesterly winds and draw in some colder air over the big lake. Lake effect snow is likely along the south shore and U.P. of Michigan Saturday night into Sunday. As much as 3-6” of snow is possible along the higher terrain of the south shore. This snow coupled with gusty winds may lead to snow squalls and poor visibilities on the roads. Temperatures on Sunday and Monday will drop into the 30s which is closer to normal. Bye Tuesday and Wednesday next week temperatures will warm again and get closer to 40°F.
