Brandon Weatherz: Bitter cold lingers this week

January 15: Bitter cold lingers this week

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather Team

Our Monday begins with wind chill values in minus 20s and minus 30s across the Northland. A breezy west wind continues to enhance how quickly our bodies lose heat, leading to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as ten minutes. A Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect across the Northland until noon Tuesday. Frostbite time staying around 30 minutes or less even through Monday afternoon. Wind chill values stay between -25 and -35 through the day today and return to -30 to -35 tonight as a wind persists around 15 mph. Air temperatures stay in single digits below zero for highs this afternoon under partly cloudy skies. Thicker clouds may help a touch overnight, but air temps are still expected to bottom out in minus single digits to minus teens.

The west wind will keep lake effect snow bands limited to far northern Bayfield County where a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 pm Monday to 12 am Wednesday. We look north of a line from Port Wing to Bayfield reaching across the Apostle Islands for 3-6″. Amounts quickly drop off going southward with <1″ expected near and south of a line from Ashland to Iron River. Another area of 1-3″ is found in the snowbelt of Iron and Gogebic Counties. A dusting is possible across the rest of the Northland as scattered flurries arrive Monday evening and linger through Tuesday night.

Temperatures will continue to bottom out below zero and top off only in the single digits each night and day through Friday. The weather pattern will finally shift over the weekend so that temps return near average on Sunday, and above average temps are expected next week.
