Brandon Weatherz: Wet system puts an end to the 40s

February 7: Wet system puts an end to the 40s

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather Team

For the past three days, highs have been between 20 and 30 degrees above average. This unseasonable warmth will continue today and tomorrow with more widespread 40s, then we trend cooler through the weekend behind a system that will bring some precipitation to the region starting later today. Our Wednesday begins with temps in low to upper 30s. Icy patches are possible in areas that have dipped below freezing. We’ve also seen areas of freezing fog reaching from Bemidji to Ely. Visibility should improve by mid-morning. A breezy east wind ramps up today with the North Shore staying in the 30s. Highs elsewhere manage low to upper 40s under cloudy skies.

There’s a slight chance for light rain today as a front gradually pushes northward across the region through the day. The widespread wet weather builds into the Northland from the west tonight. Lows stay very mild in mid-30s to near 40. Periods of rain continue Thursday with highs in low to upper 40s one last time. Rain mixes with and turns to snow from the northwest Thursday night into Friday morning. Lows will generally be in mid-20s to mid-30s with slick travel possible for the Friday morning commute, particularly in northern Minnesota.

Scattered snow showers linger on Friday and gradually move north as the system exits the region into Canada. A dusting to an inch is possible across much of northeast Minnesota with little to no accumulation expected for the Twin Ports. Rain accumulation is expected to generally range from 0.1” to 0.5” across the region. By Saturday, highs stay in low to upper 20s under cloudy skies.
