Brandon Weatherz: Areas of stubborn fog and lingering warmth

February 5: Areas of stubborn fog

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather Team

It’s another day with areas of fog that will prove to be stubborn in parts of the Northland, limiting temperatures in those areas. The air above us is still very warm for this time of year, but a shallow layer of saturation near the ground trapped under the warm air is why it’s been foggy and cold for some and warm and sunny for others. For example, Hibbing was colder than forecast Sunday with a high of 33, but Duluth hit 45, and Hayward managed 51. So far this morning, the dense fog has been near and west of a line from Aitkin to Hibbing to Orr. Those communities have the visibility issues this morning, as well as icy patches to look out for. Those spots will also be where lingering fog could keep temps in low and mid 30s today. The rest of the Northland should still see low to mid-40s with mostly cloudy skies overall.

Areas of fog will once again be in the region tonight and into Tuesday morning. Lows tonight will be in mid-20s to near 30. Tuesday is then mostly cloudy with highs ranging from low to upper 40s, with the exception of north central Minnesota if fog continues to linger as it has in these areas the last couple of days. Wednesday is another gray day with highs generally in the 40s. Precipitation finally returns to the region in the form of rain Wednesday night. Periods of rain continue Thursday, then snow mixes in with what lingers on Friday. Highs will still be in low to upper 30s on Friday. The weekend will be cooler and cloudy with 20s and 30s.
