Brandon Weatherz: Cold and blustery Wednesday

February 28: Cold and blustery Wednesday

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather Team

Blustery northwest winds and bitter cold lead to a rude awakening this morning. Break out the winter gear and use the remote starter if you’re fortunate to have one. Air temps heading out the door range from single digits for much of northwest Wisconsin to minus teens near the Canadian border, and a 10-20 mph wind has feels-like temps between -10 and -30 across the Northland. A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect across much of northern Minnesota until 10 am as frostbite will be possible on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Lake effect snow may linger for the South Shore snowbelt through the morning with additional snow staying under an inch, then snow chances move to the U.P. this afternoon. Skies will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy with highs in single digits and teens.

It’ll be another cold night with temps back in single digits above and below zero and the cold pockets of northern Minnesota dipping into the minus teens. We start out clear, then clouds increase overnight ahead of an approaching warm front. Flurries are possible along the international border Thursday morning, and a southeast wind may direct light snow along the North Shore. Skies clear from the south through the day with warmth building back into the region. Highs will range from mid-40s near Hinckley to mid-20s in Grand Marais with mid-30s in the Twin Ports.

Thursday night will see most areas staying in the 20s with clear skies, then Friday brings us back into low to mid-50s across the Northland under mostly sunny skies. A breezy south wind keeps the North Shore cooler. We’ll stay mild over the weekend. Saturday features a chance for rain and snow along the Canadian border, then a more widespread chance for mostly rain arrives Sunday. Snow mixes in Sunday night and Monday with what lingers with some accumulation possible in the region.
