Brandon Weatherz: Warm today, briefly cold tomorrow

February 22: Warm today, briefly cold tomorrow

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather Team

An overnight round of spotty snow showers exits eastward across the Arrowhead and South Shore this morning. The accompanying cloud cover erodes from the west with mostly sunny skies taking over today. It’s another very warm February day with highs ranging from near 40 to near 50 with mid-40s in the Twin Ports. A breezy west wind develops in the afternoon. Clouds return from the north behind a cold front this evening. A few snow showers try to work south of the Canadian border behind the front across the Arrowhead this evening and into the South Shore overnight.

Light lake effect snow will linger along the South Shore for the Friday morning commute, and winds shifting out of the northeast may allow the snow to extend west toward the Twin Ports. Any snow that sticks still stays under an inch, even for snowbelt communities. We dry out through the morning as high pressure slides in from the north and clears skies for us. As colder air dives in from the north, overnight lows range from single digits to 20s with upper teens expected in the Twin Ports. Highs then stay much cooler on Friday in upper teens to upper 20s.

Saturday morning will start off with temps in single digits and teens, then we start another unseasonably warm stretch with highs back in upper 30s to mid-40s. Our Saturday will otherwise be mostly sunny and windy with a southwest wind picking up near 20 mph. Sunday features more 30s and 40s with sunshine. A chance for snow will graze near and north of the Iron Range Sunday night into Monday morning, then Monday features highs in 40s and 50s. A system passing Tuesday into Wednesday will bring a combination of rain and snow to the region with some accumulation possible, followed by a shot of cold air. Snow potential is subject to change as the storm track and precipitation type remains uncertain.
