Brandon Weatherz: Wet and windy weekend ahead

April 26: Wet and windy weekend ahead

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather team

A pair of low pressure systems are set to bring much needed moisture to the Northland through the weekend. The first system tracks to the northeast moving from Nebraska Friday morning to Lake Superior Saturday afternoon. Showers build into the Northland from the west and southwest through this afternoon and evening. Our Friday otherwise features increasing clouds, highs generally in the 50s with 40s near Lake Superior, and a breezy southeast wind at 10-20 mph gusting near 30 mph.

Widespread showers and some thunderstorms fill out the Northland tonight. Temps stay mild with lows mostly in the 40s. Saturday will be wet with showers tapering off from west to east through the afternoon. Highs range from around 47 by International Falls to 52 in the Twin Ports to near 60 in Ironwood. Winds briefly shift as the first system starts to exit the region with a breezy east wind in the morning turning out of the northwest through the day. Saturday night will be cloudy with lows in the 30s and a breezy wind starting to shift back off of Lake Superior.

The second system will track from Kansas Sunday morning across the Northland toward Lake Superior on Monday. Sunday sees widespread rain taking over the region from the south through the morning and afternoon. An east wind will pick up to 25-30 mph with gusts of 45 mph expected along the shorelines. Waves will build in height peaking Sunday evening. It’ll be a chilly day as well with highs staying in the 40s and shoreline communities stuck with mid-30s to near 40.

Rain continues in the region Sunday night into Monday, then we’ll gradually dry out from the west through the day as the second system exits to the northeast. Winds shift from east in the morning to west in the afternoon, allowing waves to wane. All said and done, widespread accumulation of 1-3″ is expected in the Northland with the highest amounts in northwest Wisconsin.
