Brandon Weatherz: Winds and rain linger and dwindle today

April 17: Winds and rain linger and dwindle today

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather team

The weather system that brought yesterday’s winds and rain gradually exits the region to the east today, allowing winds to improve and showers to taper off from the west through the afternoon and evening. A Wind Advisory is still in effect until 7 am from the Twin Ports up the North Shore with gusts near 50 mph possible, then winds improve through the morning and shift out of the northwest this afternoon. As such, wave action is the highest early this morning and also tames down heading through the day. Additional rain is generally a quarter to a half inch from the iron Range to the Twin Ports down I-35 and east of there.

Temperatures start off in mid-30s to low 40s this morning, then highs stay cooler today with low 40s to low 50s. We’ll bottom out in 30s tonight with partly cloudy skies. Thursday is breezy with partly to mostly cloudy skies. A cold front will keep temps in the 40s near and north of the Iron Range, then temps warm looking east with 53 in Duluth and 59 in Ashland. We look north for sporadic showers Thursday afternoon, overnight, and lingering on Friday. Snow will become dominant for what’s out there by Friday, but any accumulation in northern areas should be limited to a dusting and melt during the day Friday.

Friday will also be windy and chilly with highs staying in upper 30s to mid-40s across the Northland. We gradually trend warmer through a sunny weekend. Dry air and breezy winds may bring a return of near critical fire weather. The next chance for rain would be Monday afternoon and overnight, and it doesn’t look too promising in terms of accumulation.
