Brandon Weatherz: Windy with evening rain

April 16: Windy with evening rain

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather team

We’re in for a windy and eventually wet stretch today, tonight, and tomorrow. Before the rain arrives, fire weather is again a focus with a Red Flag Warning in effect for Central and North St. Louis, North Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and Cook counties today. A Wind Advisory is in effect from 1 pm until midnight for Lake, Cook, South St. Louis, Carlton, and Douglas counties. These are the areas with the best chance for minor wind damage as an east wind is sustained at 20 to 30 mph and gusts near 50 mph.

A Gale Warning is in effect on Lake Superior from 10 am today until 10 am tomorrow as winds build as high as 12 to 15 feet in height this evening. The east wind will also keep shoreline communities cooler today with temps staying in low to mid-40s. Highs for inland areas will be in 50s to 60s.

Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms approach the Head of Lake Superior from the southwest in the late afternoon and evening. That rain sweeps the region to the north overnight, and periods of showers will continue through the day Wednesday. The clouds and rain keep us mild tonight with lows in mid-30s to mid-40s.

Winds shift from northeast Wednesday morning to northwest by the evening, allowing waves to wane. Highs stay in low 40s to low 50s. We’re on track for widespread accumulation between 0.25” and 0.75” with locally higher amounts possible.

Thursday is drier with mostly cloudy skies, a breezy west wind, and highs in 40s and 50s. Friday is cooler and still breezy with highs staying in upper 30s to low 40s across the Northland. We gradually trend warmer through a sunny weekend.
