Brandon Weatherz: Warm weekend ahead

April 12: Warm weekend ahead

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather team

Today starts off with a few light rain showers near the tip of the Arrowhead and into the South Shore. Morning clouds first thicken from the north, then we’ll see clearing skies this afternoon. The Northland will be between a large low near Lake Huron and a broad area of high pressure in northern Manitoba, allowing for a breezy northwest wind gusting near 30 mph. Highs range from upper 40s to upper 50s looking from north to south. Duluth should still top off around five degrees above today’s daily normal high of 47°. Above average temps will continue to take over the region through the weekend.

Tonight could be frosty as lows dip into mid-20s to low 30s under mostly clear skies. Saturday will see highs inland range from 62° in International Falls to near 75° from Brainerd to Siren. A southeast wind will keep cooler conditions near Lake Superior in the Twin Ports and along the North Shore. A weak and quick moving low pressure system will bring a chance for rain first to the Canadian border Saturday afternoon. Showers and possibly a few thunderstorms then reach across the Arrowhead and into the South Shore through the evening with a 20% chance grazing the Twin Ports.

Sunday will see a wind shift to northwest, allowing the warmth to extend to the Twin Ports in the mid-60s. The Northland will see low 60s to low 70s with mostly sunny skies. Dry air on the backside of Saturday’s system will lead to near critical fire weather conditions. Fortunately, beneficial moisture is still on the horizon. Shower and thunderstorm chances return Monday, then a large system will keep periods of rain that could be heavy at times in the forecast through Tuesday and into Wednesday. By Thursday, cooler air behind the system could allow snow to mix in with lingering precipitation.
