Sabrina Ullman: Snow will become widespread by the late afternoon

January 5 Forecast: Widespread snow this afternoon

Snow will become widespread by late afternoon and continue through the night.

After a slow start to the winter, we finally have snow chances pretty much every day this week. We will have a quiet start to the morning before snow enters the region midday today. Snow will become widespread by the late afternoon, resulting in slick travel for our evening rush hour.

Snowfall rates will be the highest tonight into early Saturday. Light snow will continue Saturday morning, but northern Wisconsin will have a break much of the day Saturday. This system will clear out Sunday morning. Total snow accumulations will be 3-6” for areas north of Carlton County and 1-3” elsewhere.

Afternoon highs today will be in the upper 20s to low 30s. We will not cool off too much tonight as overnight lows only drop to the 20s. This will be the warmest night this week.

Saturday will be a couple of degrees warmer than today, and then a cold front will move through Saturday night. Starting Sunday, we will stay below freezing throughout the Northland for at least a week. This means our snow will stick around, ski hills will be able to make more snow, and outdoor ice rinks will have good conditions to hopefully be able to open.

There is a chance of snow Monday night into Tuesday, but most of that system will likely stay to our south. There are more chances Wednesday and Thursday.
