With this morning’s update of the U.S. Drought Monitor, areas near the head of the lake are now in D-2, severe drought. Much of the Northland is in moderate drought, with areas along the Iron Range and north doing a little better with dry conditions.

Portions of Koochiching, Itasca, Lake of the Woods, and Beltrami counties will have rain tonight as a cold front passes through. A few showers are possible for St. Louis, Lake, and Cook Counties Friday morning, but we otherwise stay dry until Friday afternoon.

Another round of rain will form along the North Shore at around 1 pm Friday, becoming widespread by 7 pm. There will be a brief break late Friday evening for much of the area, but then there will be more rain late Friday night into Saturday. Saturday will bring plenty of rain for northern Minnesota, but Wisconsin will stay mostly dry until the late afternoon.

Widespread, heavy rain is likely Saturday night into Sunday. All in all, over an inch of rain is expected throughout the Northland from tonight to Monday, with over two inches possible.

Conditions clear midday Monday, but we could see more rain next Wednesday.
