Sabrina Ullman: Lake-effect snow along North Shore today

Temperatures drop January 11

Today will have some lingering snow and cooler temperatures.

Today will be cloudy with lingering snow in some areas. Areas along the North Shore, especially around Lutsen and Silver Bay, will have lake-effect snow with up to 6″ of additional accumulation. Far northern Minnesota will have an additional 2-3 inches, while others will have an inch or less of accumulation today though Friday.

Temperatures will drop 5-10 degrees by this afternoon. Overnight lows will be in the single digits above and below zero.

A second round of snow is likely Friday, staying mostly on the Wisconsin side of the Northland. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for counties along the South Shore, effective from Friday morning to Saturday morning. During this time, strong bands of lake-effect snow are likely with white-out conditions possible.

The next few days will be frigid and windy. This weekend will have highs close to zero with gusty north winds of 20-25 mph. Wind chills are expected to be in the negative teens to -20s from Friday night through the weekend.

Snow likely, mainly before 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature falling to around 13 by 5pm. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Tonight

A slight chance of snow before 9pm, then a slight chance of snow after 5am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 5. West wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Friday

Snow, mainly after 11am. Patchy blowing snow after 3pm. High near 15. Blustery, with a northeast wind 5 to 10 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Saturday

A 30 percent chance of snow. Patchy blowing snow. Cloudy, with a high near 6. Windy, with a northwest wind 20 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph.

Sunday

A slight chance of snow after noon. Mostly cloudy and cold, with a high near 0. Windy, with a northwest wind 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph.
