Brandon Weatherz: Toasty Thursday before a lake wind returns

Our Thursday begins with areas of dense fog along the South Shore and Head of Lake Superior. Use headlights and be prepared to slow down as visibility may become very poor very quickly. Fog improves through the morning with the rest of the day featuring warmth and sunshine. Highs reach mid-70s to low 80s. A southeast wind keeps the cool lake air immediately by the shorelines. This will be in stark contrast to Friday and Saturday as a strong east wind develops and holds temps surrounding Lake Superior in 40s and 50s. We could also see dense fog redevelop near the lake tonight and prove to be stubborn during the day Friday.

Our Thursday will be generally dry. We look from Brainerd to Spooner and south of there for shower and thunderstorm chances this afternoon and evening. A more widespread area of showers and thunderstorms are possible overnight through Friday morning. Rain reaches from east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin near U.S. Hwy 2. Rain may be heavy at times, including in the Twin Ports. Rain is nudged west Friday afternoon and evening.

The rest of the weekend is now looking to be rather dry in the Northland, cooperating with the Minnesota Fishing Opener. Inland communities will be back in mid-60s to low 70s on Saturday with cloudy skies. An east wind around 20 mph and gusting up to 40 mph will keep shoreline areas much cooler. A breezy east wind lingers for Mother’s Day. It will otherwise be sunny. By Monday, a wind shift out of the west will allow temps to soar into the 70s across the Northland, even for downtown Duluth and Superior.
