Justin Liles: More snow, slick roads, and bitter cold to take hold in the Northland

January 10th: Cold, snow, and slick roads

Cold, snow, and slick roads

It has been an active week here across the Northland. It’s been a good week to sharpen our winter driving skills. We are currently seeing the second of three pieces of energy rolling through the region. We were on the Northern edge of a large system that rolled through southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois (including Chicago).

Once the clipper passes through it will merge with the third area of low pressure rolling just to our south. This large low will likely slide in the same direction as the first one and once again impact Chicago and southern Wisconsin. This will continue our snow around the region, especially the north shore through Friday morning.

As the low lifts into Ontario, much colder air moves in but so does the start of the lake effect snow machine on the south shore. The machine will stay turned on through the entire week. The snowbelt will see some accumulating snow all week. By weeks end a foot and half of snow is possible.

The colder air coming in will be talked about as well. Wind chills Saturday morning will be -20° to -30° and then on Sunday Wind chill values will reach -30° to -40°. Colder than average weather looks to stay with us through most of the following week.
