Justin Liles: Fog tonight, light snow tomorrow afternoon and evening

December 28th: Light snow Saturday

Light snow Saturday

December is nearly over and as we look back at an unusual month, we must think what’s in store moving into a new year. This will go down as the warmest December on record since the National Weather Service moved on top of the hill in 1950. This would put us in second place overall when the records were kept downtown in 1877. Post 1950 is a better representation of the actual temperatures. December will also go down as the 4th least snowy on record too. We have only received 3.9 inches this month.

Patchy fog will again move in overnight. A new chance of snow arrives to the region beginning tomorrow and lasting through Saturday night. Northern Wisconsin along the snowbelt to the U.P. of Michigan have the best chance to squeeze out 2”-3” of fresh new snow. Northeasterly winds will aid in the development of this snow through lake effect. The rest of the region is looking at an inch or less.

Temperatures will finally begin to cool off by the middle of next week when daytime highs stay in the 20s and overnight lows in the teens. This means crews should be able to get out and make outdoor ice for local skating rinks and snowmachines on the ski hills should be good to go too.
