Brandon Weatherz: Severe storms possible today

Our Wednesday features two rounds of showers and thunderstorms. The first moves from southwest to northeast through the morning ahead of a warm front with heavy rain possible. If rain and clouds from the first round are slow to leave, it will cut into our potential for severe storms later in the day. In the scenario where sun does break through to warm us up in the afternoon, we look west in north central Minnesota near the cold front for the start of round two. Scattered thunderstorms would then move west to east across the Northland through the afternoon and evening.

There is widespread potential for severe weather with hail up to 2” and winds up to 70 mph possible. As of 8 am, the potential for a tornado or two has increased and extended from northwest Wisconsin across the Twin Ports toward Hibbing. Be weather aware today and keep a device on hand that receives severe weather alerts.

Showers and thunderstorms exit the Northland to the southeast overnight, and we remain rather quiet on Thursday. An unsettled weather pattern will allow for isolated showers and thunderstorms each day Friday through Sunday, mostly in the afternoon and evening. Highs today range from mid-60s in the Arrowhead to low-80s from Brainerd to Siren. Lakeside areas stay cooler with a southeast wind. Thursday will feature widespread highs in the 70s, then a warming trend kicks in and takes us well into next week when 80s become common day after day.
