Our Wednesday morning commute is messy. Most areas are reporting partially to completely snow covered roads, and drivers can expect additional accumulation and patchy blowing snow. The Winter Weather Advisory and Winter Storm Warning indicating additional travel impacts have been extended until 6 pm today for the North Shore of Lake County, South St. Louis County, and the rest of east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin south of there. Temperatures here will be steady today in upper 20s to low 30s. Areas to the north that aren’t in weather headlines may be grazed by light snow, but can otherwise expect mostly cloudy skies today with highs in the mid-20s.

A low pressure system situated at the southern Minnesota border this morning will loiter in the region today, responsible for a breezy northeast wind and periods of snow through the day. The system will begin to exit to the east on Thursday, allowing snow showers to thin out from the northwest tonight and tomorrow. Additional accumulation after 6 am today will be around 3” from Brainerd to Duluth. Amounts quickly drop off going north with less than an inch toward Grand Rapids and the Iron Range. Widespread accumulation south of this line will be a general 3-6” with higher amounts locally in the South Shore.

High pressure arrives behind the exiting system Thursday with clearing skies. Thursday night will feature temps falling to single digits below and above zero and patchy fog. Friday begins a stretch of quiet and relatively seasonable weather that continues through the weekend and into the start of next week.
